Ever since the American Revolution, Americans have had a long-standing tradition of free speech and assembly. These rights are protected by The First Amendment of our Constitution - "Congress shall make no law..." However, the Amendment also has limitations that we must explore more deeply when we consider some controversial United States Supreme Court decisions.

We will end with a cross-cultural analysis emphasizing imperial hegemony and well-known cases of intolerance towards dissenting speech, such the Salmon Rushdie incident.

Prof. Carlos Moreno is a graduate of the CUNY Law School at Queens College where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1990. He is also a graduate of the City College of New York where he obtained his bachelor's degree in Pre-Law, magna cum laude, in 1987. Prof. Moreno practiced law for 25 years and during that time participated in significant human rights cases, which took him places as varied as England, France, Italy and Germany in Europe, and Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay in the Americas.
Prof. Moreno is passionate about teaching and has created his own teaching technique based on what he calls the TTR principle, i.e. Teach, Test and Review. Prof. Moreno is a strong advocate of freedom of speech and how prominently it figures in the American democratic experiment and tradition.
